Hello, my Phoenix Massage Enthusiasts! Mike here with Mike’s Mobile Massage and with a New Year, I find some renewed motivation for physical activity and wouldn’t you know some of those “new” aches and pains! Well, some are new, and others are most likely due to my arch nemesis that is RUNNING. As I found myself walking away with my newfound soreness and slight sense of accomplishment from actual physical exertion, I couldn’t help but think about all my AMAZING clients from the Greater Phoenix area who come in with their aches and pains. Almost sounding like a broken record, I felt the urge to create this blog going through some of the advice I would speak to my client from my years of working with clients in Massage, as well as, drawing on my experiences as a Medic in the Military. So set down those running shoes, weightlifting belts (or shoes) or gloves and follow along an experience in the pains of acute injuries!
Now if you DO plan on coming into one of my Massage sessions with an acute injury ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS consult with your physician as I am NOT licensed to “TREAT” or DIAGNOSE any medical condition. The purpose and practice of massage is limited in my scope, and I only serve as a vessel to incorporate the benefits into a Massage session insert plug for my Phoenix clients #BOOKNOW. More on that later, but here we are in our little scenario, I (Mike) am out for a “casual” run out here in Phoenix enjoying the COOL January weather and pass by the usual random adorable doggo out with its human on their little jog. I then decide to take a different route and BOOM, wouldn’t you know it I don’t see the uneven surface and I twist my ankle the wrong way. As I stumble to recover my balance and potentially the pride, I may have dropped I am most likely going to look around to see who saw and walk on back to an area to assess what type of damage. Now what we have here in this event is what we will call the point of injury, in this stage this amazing body knows that something is up and now needs to go into action to protect and repair itself. So, these signals of pain and in some cases muscle tensions are the product of responses to this new stimulus that is my brand-new injury!
With this minor injury while the body is moving into the healing phase, your first goal is to PROTECT from further injury and utilize the RICE method. This stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. This first phase of self-care encourages and supports the healing process. However, I know that I am only beginning this journey into the progressive return to activity, which I will cover in part two of this blog. Some things to consider about the RICE method is that rest can be relative to the activity, and I do encourage my clients to pay attention to what the body is signaling and understand that NOT all bodies are the same. At this point I need to reiterate that I am not suggesting that you avoid the doctor, in fact I am encouraging you to seek advice from a medical professional and be cleared for massage. Then once your progressive, amazing super awesome Primary Care Physician clears you for Massage or we determine any contraindications or considerations.
How DOES this relate to Massage and WHAT can you expect during the phases of tissue healing? Well let’s discuss that massage does promote improved circulation which will assist in leading to increased blood flow which will also assist in delivering more oxygen and nutrients in injured tissues. This, in turn, can assist in the repair of injured tissues. YOUR body is amazing, and you should take care of the one you have because it is unique and inspiring through all its experiences. Motion is lotion and I want you to be able to get back to working on your fitness goals. If you are in the Phoenix area and interested in a massage, please feel free to contact me. Thank you again for your time and reading my blog, and I want to invite you to the next couple of quick reads exploring the benefits of massage. Have an AMAZING day!
Warm Regards,
